The highway renovation of our country is still in its early stage. It is a key technicalissue to assess the function of the old roads reasonably and how to upgrade the old roadeconomically and efficiently. We studied how to assess the functions of old road and how tochoose the pavement structures in this article, based on the Huizhou section of the huishenexpressway renovation project.It was in April in1993that the Huizhou section of the huishen expressway wasconstructed completely and came into service. The expressway promotes the economy inHuizhou greatly. The service level of the express has been dropped obviously during the peakhours of the traffic in recent years, and there are some damages in different degrees in thepavements and the bridges, because of the rapid growth of the traffic volume. It is urgent torenovate and expand the expressway.This article is based on the specific pavement testing data and survey data. Werespectively studied the damages of the expressway pavement, the bearing capacity of theexpressway pavement, the capability to transmit loads of the old cement concrete pavementslab, the thickness and mechanical parameters of different structure layers, the status of thesubbase and below subbase of the pavement, the character of oil matrix. We analysed theabove items inductively. We evaluated the functional performance of the old pavementthoroughly, and then we defined the parameters of the pavement design structure. Weanalysed and calculated the mechanical characters of the old pavement. Based on the analysisof the design structure parameters, we defined the minimum thickness of the extra layer ofasphalt, and the asphalt mixture and bonding material. We analysed the extra layer pavementstructure, the pavement structure of the expanded lane, and the pavement structure of the newroads. We got the optimal pavement structure project.We supplied the whole technical analysis methods about how to choose the pavementstructures for the expressway renovation in the article. It can also provide some references andhelp for the similar project and study.
