In today’s power system, power cables have lots of advantages such as safety, reliability and so on. Since the power cable having many advantages, it is extensively used in power suppply system. XLPE power cable is much more widespread availability than other power cables. Because of the XLPE’s superiority insulation capacity, it is necessary for us to handle the principle of the fault phenomenon. Power cables are laying under the ground in the conduits or tunnels, so it is difficult to for us to find the position of fault quickly and effectivly. It’s very important to find the fault location because it concerned to people’s normal life and safe. To improve XLPE cable repair efficiency is the most important thing for our Power cable management deparment.This article included the causations of cable fault and the types of fault. It also inturdeced the cable fault and the types. Gives explanation of bridge method, low voltage impulse method, voltage sampling and current sampling by impulse flash method, the secondary pulse method, and gives adetailed explanation of cable fault location method.This article also gives introductions of severl cable fault detectors.This article also introduces equipments applied in power canble fault location as well as the difference between civil apparatus and foreign counterparts. At last, this paper presents its prospect about the tendency of power cable fault location.
