Along with the social progress and the rapid development of electric power system, the cable line has been gradually replaced by the overhead line to obtain a wide range of applications, and become an important part of the transmission line. However, compared with the overhead lines, the cable lines buried underground, when the power supply system, paralysis, not only need to spend a lot of manpower and material resources to search the cable fault, but also to the social and economic bring negative effect. Therefore, to detect, analyze, diagnose and locate the cable fault.This paper first summarizes the advantages of the power cable, summed up the causes and classification of the power cable fault. Then through the research of power cable fault location and positioning method (bridge method, low voltage impulse method, pulse voltage, pulse current method and the second pulse method etc.). It is pointed out that the each measurement scope of application and limitation of application of. Subsequently introduced the innovation of power cable detection method, probe tracer method, hole antenna method, multi signal clamp method, high current low rate directly connected by pipeline detection method is proposed, the technical innovation of Xiaoshan District and old high voltage cable detection, and the best detection data.
