IEEE802.11p is a wireless communication protocol targeting at specialrequirements of vehicular communications. However, current study on IEEE802.11p has not verified if the defined transmission distance is appropriate.Based on a discrete road model, we propose the concepts of validity andnecessity of the transmission distance, and then derive formula to calculatethe probability for the transmission distance to meet the requirement ofvalidity and necessity with both equidistant distribution and approximatePoisson distribution of vehicles. The formula is calculated based onreal-world parameters of urban vehicular networks. The calculation resultshows that validity and necessity are mainly relevant to vehicle density withapproximate Poisson vehicle distribution. The transmission distance definedby IEEE802.11p is unnecessarily large in order to meet the requirement ofvalidity and necessity.
