The designation of shock absorption and isolation is one of the importantcontents in bridge’s sesmic design. High damping rubber bearings have stableperformance, strong energy dissipation ability and ductility with significantshock absorption effect. It can effectively control the seismic response ofstructure. Therefore, the high damping rubber bearings are widely used inbridges. However, due to the special properties of soft soil, the isolate measureare not recommended by national standards in soft soil.In this paper, applicability study on high damping rubber bearing forhighway bridges in soft soil conditions is carried out by using nonlinear timehistory analysis. A five-span continuous girder bridge is taken as numericalexample. Seismic response comparison of the bridge with high damping rubberbearing and laminated rubber bearing shows that: when the substructure of thebridge is rigid, the high damping rubber bearing still have great damping effecteven in soft soil.
