The problem of aging society has appeared since the late1990s in China, caring forthe aged, this is an unavoidable subject in nowadays society. With the deep developmentof housing system reform, steady advance of urban and rural development, residentialconstruction is facing an age of development and growth that which is unprecedented.However, it is obvious that most residences are designed in extensive style for basic livingdemand which falls behind the times. As a consequence, precision design is opening thenew page of residential construction.This essay focuses on the design of old-age residence. Old-age residence covers moreextensive scope contrast with ordinary elderly apartment. Moreover, it is in accord withthe trend that family to care for the aged is primary while society to care for the aged issupplementary which proposed by China National Committee on Ageing. Old-ageresidence could be easily blended in with the community and rich in style, in regard of that,it will be accepted by wider society. Through interview and survey, it finds that asignificant number of elderly people live in ordinary residences, which regardless ofconsiderations about the requirement and essential features of the residences for elderlypeople, more specifically, there have many inconveniences as well as potential safetyproblems. Therefore, this essay makes emphasis on convenience design for the purposethat to build suitable and comfortable place for elderly people, by through researchingphysiology and psychology characters of elderly people to summarize the common livinghabits, then using the research result into designing process.This article adopts induction and comparative analysis methods. First, it introducesand borrows ideas from the successful experiences of those developed Asian andEuropean countries; especially Japan which has the same eastern culture background asChina has been researched deeply. Second, first-hand investigations of several typicalelderly apartments have been done in different area of China, solutions are provided forthe problems are addressed in those investigations. Third, to maximize benefits of elderlypeople, researches engaged in several different aspects to revolve convenience designing,for instance, address chosen, transport system, structure of rooms, size of furniture, marks design, etc. As a branch of the real estate sector, it could be imagined that the elderlyresidences will increasingly attract public attention. This essay starts with the requirementof developing caring elderly people in China, initially discovers related aspects of old-ageresidences, then provides particular suggestions and solutions, eventually intends to winconcern of colleagues and industry to help to continue improving the design system ofold-age residences by disclosing and solving problems, finally to the advancement of thewell-being of elderly people. Consequently, this research has its reality and directivesignificance.
