The relay is one of the important elements in communication, control and power protectionsystem, and it widely applied in aviation, spaceflight etc. So the relay work properly or not willaffect the stability and reliability of the equipment or products directly. Hence, the method to testthe characteristics of a relay becomes more and more important. In order to achieve a certainperformance index requirements, We have to test the performance characteristic parameters ofthe relay. This paper introduces a relay testing method based on virtual instrument.In this paper, a test device of electromagnetic relay’s time characteristic parameters isdesigned, which takes the industrial control computer and data acquisition card as the center.Control the hardware drive and data acquisition of relay’s time characteristic parameters testingsystem through LABVIEW virtual instrument development platform and complete the collectionof relay coil current waveform and contact voltage waveform. We can get the relay contactdistance time through a profound analysis of the principle for DC electromagnetic relayoperation, a deep understanding of the dynamic characteristic curve for DC electromagnetic relay,and a comprehensive collection of the contact voltage waveform. Take the method of curvefitting approach to process the data and determine the coil current waveform based on thequiescent current equation of the coil to obtain the calculated value of the coil current waveform.Compare the calculated value with the static waveform when the coil armature opens, and thenget the operation time of the contacts.
