With the climate is changing, the sea ice in Arctic ocean is smaller and thinner. Theexploitation of natural resource as well as the using of shipping routes become the arctictopics people are interested in. Both of the two activities can not be carried out without iceships which are suitable for navigating in ice condition. Some arctic countries has alreadyfinished the study of arctic region, and the design and building of ice ship is highly developed.China is just at the beginning stage of the ice ship research. Because of the importanteconomical and strategic value, it is very necessary to do the studies of arctic region and iceship. The target of this thesis is the ice ship design. This thesis analyzes marine shippingenvironment of arctic region from engine view, designs two new bow for ice condition, thenresearches the effects to calm water resistance and ice condition resistance from different bowtype, chooses the orgine type and finished part of initial design. The main contents include:1、Analyzed the sea route in Arctic region and the relationship between the sea route and iceship.2、Used B-spiline, designed three different ship type with different bow.3、Researched the wave resistance with DOWSON theory and the resistance in ice conditionwith rules, choosed one type for arctic marine shipping.4、Calculated the main engine power requirement for the selected ship type, researched thecooperation of ship, main engine and propeller.5、Researched the structure of AFRAMAX oil carrier with ice class1A by using the Finnishand Swedish Ice Class Rules. The conclusion as follow: For future large ship using in arctic marine shipping, the orginetype is suitable. The ice resistance shoule be decided by ship model experiment in ice tank. The added weight from structure strengthening for ice1A110k dwt ship is about981t. Thework of this thesis is the groundwork of the initial design, and it is significance for the designof ice ship.
