Nowadays, oil tanks are going in the direction of diversification andpracticability with the advanced and proven technique, when the energy shortagebecomes more and more serious, and the construction of oil tank and accessorialfacilities is gradually booming with kinds of techniques and processes proceeded anddesign idea and construction craft introduced. However, there are still unsolveddifficult problems in the design and construction to work out basing on the practicalengineering. So, the foundation design and ground treatment are very important.spherical tank includes oil tank and gasholder. There are many kinds of gasholder,which will not be discussed here. Instead oil tank will be analyzed detailedly in thepaper.Three kinds of oil tanks are usually adopted, which are fixing roof tank, floatingroof tank and inter floating roof tank. In the recent30years, the large-sized oil tank,characterized with high strength steel, is used more and more widely. It is advanced inless space, save pipe network, fittings and steel, high production, and convenientoperation and management. The field selection of oil tank is also a policy-natured andhighly technical work, which has a great influence on construction, economic,management convenience and quality of product, it can also reduce the loss of oil andgas, prevent pollution, keep energy conservation and so on. Project reconnaissance isthe important basis of the foundation design and ground treatment in the constructionof oil tank especially for the large-sized tanks. For example, for the floating roof tankand inter floating roof tank, it’s very sensitive response with uneven settlement andthe requirement on project reconnaissance is also very strict, so it is necessary tounderstand soil characteristics, distribution range, physics mechanics property andhydro geological conditions and so on.In this paper, data on the oil tank in Algerian has bee collected to study therelated problems on design and construction of the large-size oil tank, and the issues on foundation design is given the priority analysis. There are many kinds offoundation types and treatments, such as slop protection base, ring wall base. Theconstruction methods include massive masonry, cast-in-place masonry andprefabricated structure. With the development of the techniques of ground treatment,it can choose the ground treatment techniques combined with site condition,geological conditions and the size of oil tank. For example, sand drain pre-compactionof foundation which is applicable to saturated soft clay, compressible silt, organic clay,peat; dynamic consolidation which is applicable to gravelly soils, sand, miscellaneousfill, plain fill; explosive enlargement compaction pile which is applicable to use abovethe groundwater; geotextile method which has many advantages such as light weight,good integral continuity, convenient construction, high tensile strength, goodcorrosion resistance, which can prevent local instability mixing method which mixesthe cement and curing agent.According to the design requirement of the first part, the engineering survey datain Algeria was introduced in this paper to analyze and demonstrate the foundationdesign of vibro-replacement stone column composite foundation using the standardsand finite element numerical simulation methods. In addition, the different conductedin-situ tests and collected monitoring data was used to confirm the calculations.
