With the growing scale of power systems, high voltage long distancetransmission lines become more and more. Finding and cutting the fault lines quicklyand in time is in favor of reducing the fault-line tracking burden and repair time,increasing reliability indices of power supply. Today there have been many methodsof transmission line fault location, and the best way we use now is traveling wavefault location.This paper introduces the main principle of traveling wave fault location at homeand broad which divided into single terminal and double terminals method andcompares them. Overall, the single terminal method is lower than the cost of doublemethod, and has good real-time performance, but there is a big flaw in the principle ofthe single terminal method, the accurate identification of the reflected wave head andthe point of the fault is more difficult; double terminals method is not influenced byload current and distributed capacitance, is simpler in calculation, but it cost muchmore than single terminal method and is difficult to achieve the true sense of the datasynchronization in practical applications.In this paper, the author proposes a fault location method about multipointfailure on transmission line and makes a simulation analysis, analyzes wavelet theoryand its application in traveling wave location technique. It focusing on the use ofwavelet modulus maxima theoretical analysis of the traveling wave signals, and locatethe fault point.Traveling wave fault location technology develops to now the theory becomesmore mature and more perfect, but it always be limited by many engineering factorsin practical applications, and the simulation does not fully represent the actualapplication, there is a big gap between the actual distance measurement and thesimulation. Mature application of the traveling wave fault location technology issignificant for power system’s security and stability. Therefore we should do muchmore for the research.
