Transmission lines are the vitals of electric power system. With the development of electric power system, transmission lines must be more economic, secure and reliable. Because the line faults not only harm the secure and stable operation of power system but also affect the living of societal economy and polity, the exact and reliable fault location system becomes more and more important. On the one hand, by using the exact fault location system, the time of finding fault point can be reduced and a mass of work force and outlay can be saved as well; on the other hand, it can locate the fault point timely and resume power supply quickly. Therefore the study of transmission line fault location system is an important course in electrical engineering.In the first chapter of the paper, some typical methods of transmission lines fault location in home and overseas are analyzed and summarized. The advantages and disadvantages of each method as well as its application are compared and discussed in detail. At last, the research of traveling wave fault location is proposed.In the second chapter, the basic conception and physical process of traveling wave of transmission lines are expounded, and the principle of traveling wave fault location equipment is described in detail as well.In the third chapter, the hardware design of traveling wave location equipment is studied in the round. Three main components of the location equipment hardware -Analog Channels Unit (sensor included), High Speed Data Acquisition Unit and Transient Traveling Startup Unit-are described particularly. Subsequently, the hall current sensor of magnetic compensation with the characters of high linearity, low noise and wide band is studied and presented especially.In the fourth chapter, the software design of traveling wave location equipment is also studied comprehensively. The wavelet transform theory, especially the singularity-detected theory is discussed in this chapter. At last, an algorithm of traveling wave singularity detection using modulus maximum line based on nonlinear threshold de-noising is presented after lots of simulations.Error analysis of RTDS experiment data for location equipment is described in the fifth chapter. Considering the problems lying in the experiment of the location equipment, some ideas for improving the traveling wave location equipment are put forward in the last chapter.
