With the development of ageing population in Chinese cities, the aged housingproblem has become increasingly emerging, and improvement of the urban elderly livingcondition has become the consensus of the people. Community care model is graduallybeing recognized because of the social and economic development and changes in theconcept of the aged. Because modern urban living community is the correct spatialorganization and community-based carrier in dealing with community care issues,it isnecessary to study the planning and construction of urban communities in China.This article did the analysis and comparison of elderly community development athome and abroad, surveyed the urban elderly housing needs, with the counterevidence fromtheoretical support and superiority of new urbanism, proposed that mixed elderlycommunity fit the urban elderly housing needs and it was the inevitable trend ofdevelopment of the elderly community. The mixed elderly community: according to thedegree of community aging and the scale, set up one or several buildings to service theelderly,including ordinary senior housing, apartments, daycare center, as well asmanagement services and supporting facilities, allowing the elderly to spend theirremaining years in the familiar environment of the community.Next, on the basis of visits to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other cities, thisarticle studied the typical cases with characteristics of the mixed elderly community,analyzed the district scale, community support, distribution, housing and environment,drew the results from the mixed aged community planning practice, summarized thecharacteristics of the overall planning and spatial planning, to provide the references for theurban mixed elderly community planning.The final step was planning strategies study. This part was based on previous chaptersand relevant researches and designs of practical experience, proposed the planningstrategies and suggestions on site selection, scale, spatial planning level public buildings,housing, spatial layout, road traffic,etc.
