Spectrometer, one of the most basic analytical instruments in spectroscopy, has developed about hundreds of years, from Newton has created the basis of spectroscopy to now. Now, the application of spectroscopic techniques almost covering all fields of science, from the bottom of the ocean as well as the distant universe, from micro-organisms to astron, include such areas as medicine, chemistry, geology, physics and astronomy and so on.In recent years, as the agricultural science, military applications, and environmental monitoring developed, the miniaturization and light weighting spectrometers have more required. Intelligent instruments, micro-miniaturization, integration, as well as chips have become the trend of the spectrometer developments. At the same time, mini-spectrometer, with compactness, light-weighting, high flexibility and low price, has become the hotspot of spectral instrument development. People put more efforts on the research of minispectrometer.This paper reviews the develop history of spectral devices and analyze the develop circumstance and trend. Then introduces the fundamental characteristics of spectrometer as well as plane diffraction grating instrument system, based on the fundamental principles of spectroscopy instrument. Its main duties include about three aspects.First, After analyzing and comparing each part of spectrometer, the compact Ebert plane grating spectrometer optical system is adopted. Second, the linear-array CCD system using for spectral signal acquisition based on USB2.0is designed. Spectrum is translated into electrical signals through the CCD, after AD converted into FIFO, then introduced the computer through USB finally.Third, CPLD, the master chip, providing driving signal for AD, CCD, and FIFO, coordinating the work schedule, controls the excitation light source switch and drives the electric motor for the grating instrument system.Thus obtained key technologys,such as data acquisition and data upload.These works have laid the technical foundation for the minaturzation of spectrometers.
