The high temperature is characterized as the climate character in Hainan province where the pavement damage is generally occurred. Due to the special tropical environment in Hainan province, the asphalt selection, mixture design and pavement structure design are closely related to the climate of Hainan province, thus, the reasonable climate region and temperature distribution pattern are much significant for pavement design. With the increasing traffic and overloading vehicles, the rutting of asphalt pavements has become a remarkable and universal problem. The formation mechanism of rutting becomes a heated research topic around the world. The purpose of this study is to understand the effects of special climate factors and their rule of combination in Hainan province on road construction, and to provide basic weather information and research foundation for highway planning, design, construction, maintenance, service and relevant scientific research. By monitoring on-site the asphalt pavement temperature field and statistical analyzing experimental data, the asphalt pavement rutting and its formation law were studied which plays a very significant role in practical guidance for all aspects of highway construction in Hainan province. Through the systematic investigation, field test, and numerical calculation, the achievements can be drawn as follows:1. A variety of meteorological information and data in Hainan province were investigated and collected respectively. By referring to the specific requirements and related researches, the climate characteristics of Hainan province was predicted with selecting a reasonable interpolation method which called inverse distance weighted. Then, the sub-climatic factors of Hainan province was analyzed with interpolation method as well. Complying with the principles of natural division and using temperature and humidity as climate indicator, the highway climate partition was presented for Hainan province which provides a reference for highway construction and research.2. The temperature-depth-time law of typical asphalt pavement in Hainan Province was measured and the temperature data was analyzed. Then, based on the test results, the effect of different pavement structure on the temperature was examined. Then, the distribution of temperature field in the pavement was simulated with finite element method. Further, the test results were utilized to validate the simulated model and the flexibility of the numerical results of temperature field.3. According to temperature in Hainan climate zoning map and test result, pavement structure rut was calculated respectively by numerical analysis model of temperature field and the formation laws of rutting was illustrated. The calculation results show that the climate factor date which obtained from Hainan climate zoning map was reliability. In addition, the influences of surface structure and the structure thickness on pavement rutting were investigated as well.
