The application of electric energy, which acts as a pillar energy and economic artery in modern society, is one of the most important symbols of the level of development and comprehensive national power of a country. There are some long-standing problems in the power grid construction and operation, such as lacking of reactive power compensation capacity and reasonable equipment. With the rapid development of national economy, there are more and more industrial and civil electrical devices in distribution power grid. These loads, which have the electrical characteristics of low power factor, nonlinear, impact, bring so much power quality problems as low power factor, voltage fluctuation and flicker, three phase voltage unbalance, high-order harmonic pollution and etc. A novel reactive power compensation equipment based on Magnetic-Valve Controllable Reactor is proposed. It can compensate the system reactive power rapidly according to the reactive power of the system to enhance the system stability and to improve the quality of power supply.First of all, the working principle of Magnetic-Valve Controllable Reactor was analyzed in detail in this paper. The mathematic model of the reactor was built, the work character and the control character of MCR were analyzed according to the model. The calculation of compensation capacity under different conditions was obtained from the basic principle of improving the system voltage adjustment and increasing the transmission line capacity with reactive power compensation, which laid the foundation for the research of the control strategy and design of the experimental prototype. Then, the compensation equipment controller based on DSP (TMS320F2811) was designed. The signal modulate circuit, the voltage synchronous circuit, the switch input and output circuit, the thyristor drive circuit and interactive interface between human and machine were introduced. With the main program of control system introduced, sampling current and voltage signal, calculating compensation capacity, generating the thyristor trigger signal and processing protective relay and fault can be done with DSP interrupt service. The anti-jamming design of control system was analyzed briefly.Finally, the effectiveness of this control system had been verified through the experimental tests. The results showed that this reactive power compensation system based on MCR is a rational design, a high control accuracy and is stable enough to satisfy the project actual require.
