The reactive power balance is very important to improve the efficiency of the power system and quality of electricity, according to the present situation and development of power industry, research of novel reactive power compensation device is a key matter before us.At present, the main device of reactive power compensation are synchronous compensator and static device, their price is very high and it is difficulty to maintenance.Novel controllable reactor is one important device in voltage controlling and reactive power compensation, it attract more attention and is applied in many fields. Compared with the present static model dynamic reacti.ve power compensation , it has many advantages such as applied in a wide range, high reliable, low harmonious, simple to maintenance. It is one economical static model reactive compensation device.Controllable reactor can be applied in a wide range in future, related with high voltage and super-high voltage controlling, reactive power control; improve the power system stability and increase the capacity of transmitting power, over-voltage control, current compensation, and so on.There are many kinds of controllable reactors; the magnetic valve thyristor controlled reactor is the most useful one.'Magnetic valve' is put forward in Soviet Russia in 1986 by researcher; it advance the controllable reactor principle. The main iron core of the magnetic valve thyristor controlled reactor is separated into two same parts and each of iron columns has a short section, which area reduces obviously than others. During working process, only the shortsection is saturated. By change it, we can change the compensating capacity of the reactor. It is proved to be effective in the limitation of voltage fluctuation in power networks. It can provide higher reliability and safety in the supply of electrical power, its special characteristics are analyzed and found that it is an improved form of TCR, it generates less harmonics and has auto-supply system of exciting direct current. In addition. Its volt-ampere characteristic is approximating linear, which greatly increases the accuracy of compensation and improves the dynamic behavior in the process of voltage fluctuation. It has the advantages of simple configuration, less harmonics, relative less response time, larger regulating range, etc. it has not only technical but also economic superiorities and can be widely used to improved the voltage regulation and reactive power compensating of power system.This article mainly review the development of reactor and introduce the advantage of the magnetic valve reactor, then get the mathematical model of it through mathematical analysis after erecting one method of simulate the magnetization curve of the corn. After analysis the model of the reactor, we get the controlling characteristic. Later, we simulate its characteristic according to its simulation model. At last, we analysis its application in voltage controlling and Arc-quenching.
