As the globalization of world economy is accelerated and economic ties between countries are enhanced, the importance of exhibition and convention industry as a platform for business and trade is especially prominent nowadays. And exhibition and convention buildings in China, as the carrier of exhibition and convention industry development, are gradually growing into large exhibition and convention complex in line with international standards after experiencing a series of changes. Chengdu, with a long history, has been an important large city in China since the ancient times, and is currently the political, economic and cultural center of the western region. The exhibition and convention industry in Chengdu has been under rapid development since2000, and the construction of exhibition and convention buildings there is now playing a leading role in the western region. However, there are almost zero studies on the development of exhibition and convention buildings in Chengdu. This thesis, by filling the gap, is important contribution to the development of exhibition and convention buildings in China, as well as in other large and medium cities in the central and western regions.This thesis is focused on studying business and trade exchange venues in Chengdu built before the foundation of PRC, and exhibition and convention buildings built after that and used mainly for exhibitions. Following the vein of time changes and steps of building development, the thesis demonstrates the political, economic and cultural factors that have driven the development of exhibition and convention buildings in Chengdu. Based on fieldwork study on existing exhibition and convention buildings in Chengdu, reference to relevant historical documents, as well as architectural design methodologies, and the application of architecture, city planning, economy and management knowledge, the thesis elaborates on the development of exhibition and convention buildings in Chengdu, analyzes on typical ones among them, and finally summarizes the status and trend of exhibition and convention building development in Chengdu, points out the problems and proposes the appropriate future development strategies.The study on the development of exhibition and convention buildings in Chengdu in this thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter, as an introduction, illustrates relevant definitions, including exhibition and convention industry, exhibition and convention economy, exhibition and convention building etc, elaborates on the background information and the current status of studies on the subject in and outside of China, and points out the purpose, importance and methodologies of the study.The second chapter is focused on the general introduction to the development of Chengdu as a city, as well as the exhibition and convention industry there.As a key part of the thesis, the third chapter firstly presents the development vein of exhibition and convention buildings after the foundation of PRC, then introduces Chengdu Quanye Fair and Chengdu Quanye Exhibition Center in the period of Republic of China, and finally elaborates on a series of exhibition and convention buildings used for exhibitions after the foundation of PRC.The fourth chapter prepares the ground for the summary in the next chapter on the development features of exhibition and convention buildings in Chengdu by analytically comparing typical buildings there from various aspects.The last chapter proposes appropriate future development strategies for exhibition and convention buildings in Chengdu based on the summary of the status and trend of exhibition and convention building development in Chengdu, and the existing problems.
