With the development of economy in China, exhibition and convention buildings (ECB) in costal region have been ongoing their evolutional progress. After Chinese open and reform in 1978, a lot of exhibition buildings have been constructed and used. Based on huge requirements of the exhibition market and an increasing exhibition industry, the design quality and the speed of the exhibition and convention buildings in costal region have been improved sharply. As can be seen from the research of recent stages, there are some related theoretical results regarding exhibition buildings both from home and abroad. Compared with the development of other developed countries, it is essential that we have a large gap to them in the building industry. It is inadequate of the depth and extent in our academic, not only in the preliminary design but also in the management of after as-built stage. There are many cases in exhibition buildings whose outer figuration are unsatisfactory, because they are lacking of the guidance by systematical design principles. For instance, the traditional elements are replaced by the modern ones; the buildings shapes tend to be similar; some buildings are not considered with the relationship between themselves and the environment. Therefore, the objects researched in the dissertation are coastal ECBs functioning on exhibition and convention as well as food supply and entertainment. Through analyzing their different configuration, color, textural elements structure and designing methods, the author indicate the effects these factors result in. What's more, based on overseas practical projects a design methodology of the coastal ECBs'outer configuration has also been proposed. The main thread of the dissertation is: Ch. 1 Introduction, Ch. 2 Terms Defining, such as ECB Categorizing and Outer Configuration, Ch. 3 Composing Elements, Ch. 4 Semantic Expression, elaborating the lingual analysis of the three elements and their influence to visitors and cities, Ch. 5 Design methodology and Chapter 6 Conclusion.
