Under the circumstance of convergence and divergence of regional and global culture, the regional problems in architecture are increasingly exposed. How to balance both aspects, almost has become the prime issue for modern architects, particularly the ones are from multi-ethnic regional areas. In specific, vernacular dwelling and agrestic settlement, different from so-called grand design, harmoniously and fittingly balance and integrate artifact and nature, as well as tradition and modern, which also give a wise response on the objective world. Therefore, vernacular dwelling, as a powerful part in the field of architecture, provides a design theory which is based on geographic distribution. This is the basic background of this paper, in terms of historical background and academic background.As a sub-theory of architecture, tectonics argues that the basis of architecture should be building, and the ways of building, associated with materials. It is concerned only about the process of a building, but not the significance of building. As a matter of fact, it will be the entry point of the research of this paper which contains archetype and phenomenology as basic theoretical supports, as well as an example which is "Yi Keying" traditional vernacular dwelling. Firstly, it will begin with the architectural space patterns of "Yi Keyin". and then analyze its structure of its typical elements, characteristics, space organization and construction skills to refine the characteristics of its spatial composition. Secondly, by explaining the building process of "Yi Keying" traditional vernacular dwelling and analyzing on the forming rule of its architectural elements, a conclusion on the characteristics and value of its building techniques will be made. Besides, it will be discussed that what can be enlightened to the modern society by the traditions and characteristics of those techniques. Thirdly, it will further figure out four aspects of the underlying construct, which are separation and integration, the use of the modulus, the relationship between the profile and the grounding, space and node, and analyze on them to find out the basic rules and internal sequence behind "Yi Keyin" traditional vernacular dwelling as well as the regional spirits underneath those historical buildings. Finally, according to the experience of "Yi Keying" village, the insights which are learned from "Yi Keying" village are their recognition of place and spirit of place. In all, from these four aspects on the characteristics and rules of "Yi Keyin" traditional vernacular dwelling in Yunnan, with her own experience, the author will conclude an opinion that will improve the sense, attitude and means of design, and hope it will have positive influences on her future design.
