With the development of urban economy and improvement of living standards, more and more power energy are demanded, requirements for the high quality of power supply are also increased. In the power system network, the distribution network is the link most closely related to the urban development and living. The application of automation technology in the distribution network has below benefits: improve the quality of power supply; reduce the fault outage time and frequency; reduce user outage cost, enhance the economic and social efficiency of enterprises and so on.In this paper, firstly the problems of implementing distribution automation were described, and the situation and development trend of domestic and international distribution network automation was analyzed. Then the existing distribution automation technology was studied and analyzed. Mainly it analyzed in situ type feeder automation and remote control type feeder automation technology. The suitable feeder automation technology was proposed for the distribution network characteristics of the Beijing Chaoyang District. Then, according to the geographical profiles and grid overview of Chaoyang District, Beijing, remote control mode based distribution network automation construction principles, as well as specific program of works were designed. Finally, through the system simulation tests, the example of the outage cost and electricity losses were calculated and analyzed. Using the analytic hierarchy, remote control based distribution automation project was analyzed from points of technical, economic, social, and comprehensive benefits. The remote control mode was determined as the optimal solution of the distribution network automation project. This paper provides the effective reference engineering solutions for the building of distribution automation in the same size urban areas, and enhances the distribution network automation significantly.
