Distribution network is the last part of power system which faces to the customers directly. Distribution automation system is the important part of the power system. With the continuous development of power system, Distribution automation faces more challenges. Fault location for distribution network is the critical functions of feeder automation system, it’s essential to detect and isolate the fault feeder line as soon as possible while fault appears. Study the algorithms of fault diagnosis in distribution network is the core of this paper.No matter what algorithm the distribution network fault location adopts, the distribution network topology should be taken for basis, the reasonable mathematical description of the topological structure is helpful to the realization of the fault location. Right now, the most current algorithms for distribution network fault location are based on FTU. These algorithms are based on the distribution network topology, as to generate network describe matrix, and then the fault information matrix fixed from FTU uploaded information, then get fault judgment matrix, as so fault location. Fault location such large amount of calculation, sometimes even to completing standard processes, and it is difficult to solve the problem of the fault about feeder end.Based on the analysis of the matrix algorithm for distribution network fault location. The distribution network topology structure characteristics were fully exploited, and the layer model of distribution network were used. Puts forward the algorithm for fault location based on the layered distribution network. This algorithm can clearly express the vertex layered situation in distribution network, and the topological structure description and fault location, it is applicable to general fault zone (contain the mutual couplings) and general fault section (not contain the mutual couplings). As to the fault condition at the end of the feeder, the author puts forward adding virtual node at end of the feeder, then using a layered model to fault location.Because of the FTU installation in the outdoors, its work environment is badly, may be caused the report information missing or distortion. When the shortage of fault information of the FTU uploaded, puts forward a fault location algorithm based on the current measurement. Using of the correlation of fault current through each node, the missing fault information were complemented. Then restarts the fault location of distribution network. As to the distortion of the fault information, puts forward the algorithm which based on load variation through of switch. Using the principle of the node load variation of switch, the distortion of the fault information was corrected. Then restarts the fault location, example analysis verify the correctness of the algorithm.
