In recent years, the timber demand of our country is growing, in order to satisfy this development tendency, the corresponding timber carrying ship requires more professional, from the general cargo ship and bulk carrier before to the timber ship that specialized and engaged in the timber transportation now, and the number increases quickly. However, timber ship is one kind of ship type that is very risky, and also the timber cargo is very professional, therefore, there come marine accidents frequently which cause serious economic losses.Although marine technology today is developing constantly, and the ships are developing towards large-scale, high speed and specialization direction, meanwhile the forecast level of wind and wave is also improving, while sailing in rough sea environment is still the major threat to the navigation safety of the ship. Accidents of significant personal injury and death and property losses which caused by serious hydro-meteorological conditions occur from time to time.This thesis discusses navigation safety assessment of timber ship in rough sea. In view of the special form of timber ship, the thesis analyzes timber ship’s characteristics as well as characteristics of cargo, several major timber ship routes in the world, the rough sea weather which may be encountered during the voyage and its influences to timber ship’s navigation safety. This thesis draws lessons from related both domestic and abroad researches about timber ship’s navigation safety, starts with three aspects, that is crew, machine (ship) and environment, according to the accident causes, analyzes the factors of timber ship’s navigation safety affected by rough sea, determines assessment index system of timber ship’s navigation safety in rough sea, uses Bayesian Network to realize the assessment, and eventually works out which index contributes the most to the maritime accidents of timber ship in rough sea. Furthermore this thesis analyzes the assessment results and then come up with some corresponding suggestions to promote timber ship’s navigation safety in rough sea. This thesis will provide a reference basis for the timber ship navigating in rough sea and will also improve navigation safety of timber ship in rough sea, reduce maritime accidents and provide decision making basis for captains and shipping companies.
