With the development of global trade, the vessels increasingly develop into large scale, and the number of large vessels is increasing. Due to large vessels’weakness of large inertia, poor performance to stop, poor course stability, the berthing of large vessels most still require assistance of tugs to avoid accidents. However, in certain special circumstances or requirements, large vessels rely on their own manipulation to berth themselves. The paper mainly researches the control course and speed in the process of self-berthing of the vessels to provide a basis for self-berthing of large vessels, which has important practical significance. The main work done includes:Firstly, study on large vessels’trajectory prediction algorithm. With the log’s performance characteristics, combined with the MMG ship mathematical model, different ship state trajectory prediction algorithm is established for the reference to members of ship manipulation.Secondly, study on self-berthing of large vessels. Through the study of control of ship’s course and speed to explore the independent berthing method, study on the output of rudder angle under different change of heading angle and the pediment distance from different speeds in different engine conditions to a minimum speed to maintain rudder effect. In actual process of berthing, based on these data, the members of ship manipulation can determine whether ship’s berthing process is safe and what measures should be taken.Finally, verify the effectiveness of the method of this study of self-berthing. Through running in the commercial marine simulator, verify the effectiveness of the method of self-berthing in the paper. Select a ship model in the simulator to simulate. Then the compare obtained experimental data with the data obtained through this method, results show that the proposed method in the paper is effective and feasible.Applying the method of self-berthing of large vessels into practice, can meet the requirements of the safety of self-berthing during emergency or special conditions, change the traditional form of relying on the driver’s way of good seamanship, and thus can improve the efficiency and security of self-berthing of large vessels.
