Distributed Control System (DCS) is widely used in the generating units to achieve safety and economy efficiency. The design of the DCS and the skill level of the operators are two key factors for the safety and efficiency. Hence research of DCS simulation is important to both control quality and operator training. Hardware in the Loop (HIL) simulation is a technique that provides an effective platform by adding the complexity of the plant under control to the simulation loop. DCS simulation with HIL technique can acquire the same Man-Machine Interface as the real system and simulate the dynamic characteristic of the controlled plant at the same time.EDPF-NT plus is a DCS developed by GDZS Co.Ltd. Stimulation simulation and virtual DPU simulation could achieved based on the EDPF-NT plus DCS. Other than using available simulation supporting software products, MATLAB is chosed to support the DCS simulation since the flexibility on plant modeling and advanced control application. Thus this DCS simulation method achieves some advances on plant identification and advanced control algorithms. Four aspects of work were done focusing on the design of DCS and DCS HIL simulation.(1) Design, Configuration and debugging of a small-scale biomass power plant control system was done using the EDPF-NT plus DCS, including data acquisition system, electrical control system, sequence control system, modulation control system and furnace safety supervision system.(2) Stimulation simulation and virtual DPU simulation are achieved on the EDPF-NT plus DCS. MATLAB is chosed as the simulation supporting software, and thus the DCS simulation achieves some advances on plant identification and advanced control application.(3) Boiler drum level and feed water flow was modeled by using system identification method with the help of knowing mechanism, and the HIL simulation of the boiler drum level control system is realized.(4) Two approaches of fuzzy-PID control are achieved and compared. The one adopted the DCS algorithm modules to simulate the fuzzy control algorithm; and the other used the fuzzy control module in MATLAB/SIMULINK with the help of data communication between MATLAB and DCS. Compare of control quality of these two controllers was done by using the HIL simulation technique, thus this technique might also contribute to research and application of advance control algorithm in the power plants.
