Shipping technology reflects the level of a country’s comprehensive national strength. The ship power system is an important part of the ship, an important symbol of the marine technology. With the improving of the automation capabilities in ship power system and the control system becomes more complex, coupled with the poor working conditions and more ship operating conditions changed, the type of failures that can occur in ship power system is more and more, and the cause is increasingly complex.In the traditional sense, the ship power system fault diagnosis mainly relies on the experience and judgment of electrical engineer. Due to the limited experience and knowledge the management personnel have, couple with the influence of random factors such as ambient temperature, when the system is vulnerable to unexpected events, managers sometimes can’t make the right judgment. Delaying the timing of repair failure may lead to a range of other failure occurs, or even cause serious consequences such as black out. The paper aims to develop the fault diagnosis software specifically applied to the ship power system. It aggregates the annual work experience of a number of marine electrical experts. When faults occur or impending occur, the software can accurately locate, determine the cause and propose fix programs to help managers making a fast and accurate judgment on the failure phenomenon. It helps to reduce accidents and save maintenance costs.The fault diagnosis software is developed using the principle of expert system, combine with the expert knowledge and transient analysis for the ship power system. Firstly, establish a mathematical model of the ship power system that can be used to calculate. Then combine with the expertise and protection knowledge, to analysis the failure mechanism of the system components, and propose the method to calculate the variation of the node voltage and phase current in network. Finally, design the ship power system fault diagnosis software, including establish the knowledge base, determine the reasoning mechanisms, design software interface, program software features and so on.The paper study ship power system, analysis its failure mechanism, study diagnostic methods. Finally, design the ship power system fault diagnosis software under the Windows platform, using Visual Studio2010environment, applying C#language. It enables diagnostic function such as fault detection, fault location and cause determine. After testing, the software can be used to diagnose simple failures in the ship power system.
