Ship fires occur frequently and there might be dangerous disasters. Life safety, property protection, cargoes on the ship, and the ship safety itself are the concerns. Loss of lives, damages to property and environmental pollution might result from the fires.With the rapid development of water mist fire-extinguishing technology, water mist fire-extinguishing systems has begun to replaced the former "Halon" fire-extinguishing agents products because of its applications in the marine fire fighting, less water consumption, causing no pollution, the wide range of workloads and low water damage. At the same time, because of the particularity of fire in ships, the application of marine water mist fire extinguishing systems is becoming a trend in ships. In order to protect the people and other protected objects in ships, according to the SOLAS convention, the fixed water-base local fire fighting system was added..And, due to the immaturity in the domestic and international study on the water mist fire-extinguishing technology, both in theories and applications, the practical application has not achieved the desired level. Under this situation, this paper studies the design of the fire fighting system for the main engine and other protection fields in ships, and it will be very valuable and meaningful in promoting the application of technology in China.At the beginning, the main function of the water mist fire-extinguishing system is researched in this thesis. Emphases are put on the overview about the extinguishing mechanisms and atomization mechanisms. Furtermore, the main components of the water mist fire-extinguishing systems are chosen according to the Code of Design for Water Spray Extinguishing Systems and a new fixed water mist fire test-bed was designed and built. Finally, a perfect and stable control system for the water mist fire-extinguishing systems is designed by PLC which has some practical application value for ships.
