Chongqing, under the central government, has achieved rapid social and economicdevelopments and entered an era of planning "two circles" during its construction. Theexpansion of urban residential constructions has entailed the numerous mountainousresidences in their prompt appearances. The pedestrian system with a large-scale for themountainous residences is not only the space on which the residents’ stretch their legs, but also by which the community members can communicate while doing exercises. Aproper pedestrian system is profitable in developing the mountainous residences and aswell the urban ones. The pedestrian systems for the mountainous residences nowadaysare mainly within the community, having not yet developed in their formations unityand continuity, of which the "internalization" has cut the connection between theresidents and the civic events. It is the deviated guiding thoughts about the pedestriansystems’ construction that caused the problem. With this in mind, this paper has introduced "symbiosis theory" as the guidingthought for systematically planning the pedestrian systems for the mountainous livingareas. Based the analysis which proved that "symbiosis theory" can be inevitablyapplied to the systems, this paper has gone through the methodologies to practice thetheory in the plan and with regard to the characteristics of mountainous areas, putforward their needs for coexisting. With the mountainous residences of Chongqing’smain city as the research object, this paper has explored the limitations of symbiosisthrough discussing the needs for it in five respects: the pedestrian and systemicmountainous areas’ structures, mountainous areas’ traffic plans, facilities for the publicservices, landscapes of greenness, and the spatial structure of the society. On the basisof deeply studying the limitations of the symbiosis of the pedestrian system for themountainous living areas and explaining the unsatisfactoriness about current planningmethods, this paper has put forward a systematic method for it and make up for thedeficiency in the pedestrian systems in terms of the regulations and policies about them. This paper, on the one hand, has proposed the proper guidance for the planning of thepedestrian system for the mountainous living areas, on the other hand fulfilled the aimof developing pedestrian system and the living areas in a coexisting and interacting way.Paper is divided into four parts and seven chapters:The first part is the first chapter, which has mainly discussed the research background and significance, the research question, the research content, concepts andframe, etc.The second part constitutes of chapter2and chapter3, which has been the researchabout the basic theory, and has discussed internal relationship between the connotations, classification of the object and the symbiosis theory, and has summarized the researchmethodologies domestic and abroad and put forward the symbiosis needs of theChongqing’s mountainous living areas. The third part constitutes of chapter4and chapter5, which is the study about themethodologies of systematically planning the pedestrian systems for the mountainousliving areas under the guidance of symbiosis theory. The fourth part has firstly summarized the factors that affect the construction of thepedestrian system for the mountainous living areas and analyzed the current symbiosisstate between the areas and the factors and compared to the existing planning methods, then has further elaborated on the systems’ characteristics and limitations of symbiosis. The fifth part has based on the characteristics and limitations, put forward concreteplanning methods in terms of the supporting structures, the improvement of thesystemic spatial structures, hopefully able to guide the development of the pedestriansystem and elevate the attractiveness of community pedestrian, reaching a mutualprosperity between the community pedestrian system and the civic events. The sixth part is the final chapter, namely the summary, which has included themain conclusions and innovative points, and looked ahead to the sequencing researches.
