| Steel plate shear wall with large aspect ratio (SPSW-LAR) doesn’t need to occupythe whole span of bay and can be used in structures which need large open space orlarger open holes in windows and doors; meanwhile, it won’t weaken the framecolumn as it doesn’t connect to the column. The mechanical property of SPSW-LAR ismainly studied in this paper. Bearing capacity, initial stiffness and hysteretic behaviorof SPSW with two free sides, side stiffeners and horizontal bracings are researchedusing finite element method in this paper. The obtained results provide a basis forfurther study and application of the SPSW-LAR. The main research contents are listedas follows:1. Beam-column connection is hinged in the finite element model and ignoringthe lateral force resistances of frame. SPSW-LAR with different side stiffeners havebeen investigated on initial stiffness and bearing capacity theoretically, the resultsshow that side stiffeners can significantly improve the initial stiffness and bearingcapacity of SPSW-LAR, and they continue to improve with the increasing of stiffnessof stiffeners until the SPSW is fully stiffened. Fully stiffened SPSW is a good lateralforce resisting system with high initial stiffness and bearing capacity.2. The methods for estimating SPSW-LAR’s ultimate bearing capacity areobtained by analyzing the influence of width, height and thickness of steel plane toSPSW. And the effects of different parameters on the fully stiffened SPSW arediscussed. Analytical results show that the fully stiffened stiffness has a linear relationwith both the thickness and the quadratic height, while it has nothing to do with widthof the plate, then the design formula of fully stiffen side stiffener are concluded. 3. The research on the side stiffened SPSW with lateral bracings has proved thatthe horizontal braces can significantly conduce to reducing the section of sidestiffeners and improve the initial stiffness of SPSW, but have few effects on bearingcapacity. The calculating formulas for horizontal braces and fully stiffened sidestiffeners with horizontal braces have been derived.4. Bolt connection of beam and the top of side stiffeners with slotted holes are putforward, which can make the axial force in the side stiffened component does nottransfer to the lower floor, so the force transmission of the system is clear and direct,simple calculating and easy to design. The side stiffeners using slotted holesconnections can eliminate the harmful effects of side stiffener to the structure anddefinite the additional force imposed on frame including axial force to the column andbending moment to the beam.5. Hysteretic characteristic of SPSW is studied. Results indicate that hystereticbehavior of SPSW with both free sides is poor, and it can be improved obviously asincreasing side stiffeners. As a result, the side stiffened SPSW-LAR is suitable forapplication in high earthquake intensity regions for its good seismic behavior. |
