The steel plate shear walls (SPSW) have been widely used as a double lateral resistantsystem in high intensity earthquake regions. This structural system has high lateral stiffness,excellent energy dissipation, good ductility and high security reserve.Unstiffened steel plate shear wall will buckle at very low shear load and developrather considerable out-of-plane deformation at service load. Based on these properties ofunstiffened steel plate shear wall, it is necessary to located stiffeners, which can enhancethe buckling load and restrain out-of-plane deformation. However, the most of past studiesare mainly adopted opened section stiffener that damage is seriously after the buckling ofsteel plate shear wall. Therefore, the opened section stiffener cannot work as scheduled.Based on test and numerical analysis, the SPSW with discrete vertical closed stiffener arestudied in this dissertation. And the main works are as follows:(1) Based on the Meishan Count7#, three model specimens of3-storey and1-baysteel plate shear wall with1/4scale from the prototypes are designed to test underlow-cycle reverse loading.The stiffness, bearing capacity, ductility, dissipation energy ofthe SPSW, as well as the deformation and stress distribution of infill plate are detailedinvestigated by analyzing the test phenomena and data. Meanwhile, the percentage oflateral shear and overturning moment assumed by the shear plate and steel frame areconfirmed under design load. Experimental results show that, a) SPSW has stable hystereticloop, excellent energy dissipation, and good ductility performance with the ultimatedisplacement ductility factor greater than3and slow degradation of stiffness and strengthat the later loading stage. b) The stiffness of SPSW was enhanced by setting closed sectionstiffener. In the process of loading, no obvious buckling of stiffener was found. c) SPSWalternately stiffened by one side channels has the same lateral stiffness as SPSW with bothside stiffeners under identical axial compression. And the former SPSW has been proved topossess lighter in weight, higher construction speed and smaller residual stress, which canbe applied practical engineering.(2)In order to nicety analyze the hysteretic behavior of SPSW under vertical load, theexact finite model for SPSW with discrete vertical closed stiffener was established by usingthe shell elements(Shell181). The effectiveness and validity of the model weredemonstrated by comparing low-cycle reverse loading condition with test results. The results showed that finite element method can predict the SPSW with discrete verticalclosed stiffener accurately which provides the basis for the follow-up analysis.(3) The mechanical property of stiffened SPSW with opening was analyzed with theFEA used. An important outcome of study is that stiffened SPSW with opening can besimplified by ignoring the presence of an opening, and multiplying the results obtained forultimate bearing capacity, initial stiffness and elastic buckling load by a reduction factor.
