Research On The Contemporary Open Space Of Zhongguancun West Zone Of Beijing

The rapid development of urbanization in modern Beijing brings out alarge quantity of contemporary open space in different scales and differenttypes. However, there are a lot of problems in use after all these space havebeen built. And they all show the importance of research on the Postoccupancy evaluation of open spaces in order to avoid the failure cases beingcreated by urban planners and architects again and again.This paper proposes to study the spatial situations of open space ofZhongguancun west zone in Beijing as a typical case of the contemporaryopen space in Beijing, and is based on a one-year continuing site investigationduring the period from May2010to May2011. Reference to research on PostOccupancy Evaluation (POE), the methods includes interviewing the users,taking photos systematically, drawing behavior maps,survey and so on. Inthis way, information, statistics and analysis on the quality of the physicalenvironment and the use of the open space in Zhongguancun west zone areobtained. In this paper, the open space is divided into three parts: pedestrianaccess, square and green space. In Chapter2, it studies the overalldevelopment situation and the overall use of the whole three parts. In Chapter3to5, each part of the open space is Specialized researched. In the lastChapter, it summarizes the Advantages and disadvantages of the open space inZhongguancun west zone, and tries to provide some suggestions for the futureuse and development of this area as well as some similar urban planningprojects.
