Study On The Constructing Technique And Culture Of The Dongs’ Duum-tower In The Southest Of Guizhou Province

This paper studies drum-tower, which is a representive architecture of Dongculture in Southeast of Guizhou Province. Having been in Dong village in a long time,drum-towers though seldom known by people outside, they are still elegant andbeautiful. The drum-tower is an unique type of architecture among Chinese nationalarchitectures, and symbols Dong People’s culture. It is the sign of Dong People’swisdom as well as the treasure of China’s architecture heritage.The drum-tower is exclusive Dong people’s architecture, and it is closely related toDong People’s culture and life. It is the core of Dong village. Through studying itsoutlooks, culture and spirit, we can know about the architectural features of Dongpeople and its social culture characteristics, and this is a valuable topic to study. Thispaper tries to study the origin, evolution of the drum-tower, and its tangible andintangible relations with Dong society, and the building techniques, form and space,decoration culture of it. The paper also illustrates the charm of the drum-tower and thecultural core of Dong traditional culture which it represents by using examples.The drum-tower has Dong nationalist feature, and local characteristics as well assome features of Chinese traditional architecture. It is because it is based on thetraditional Chinese architecture, and then combined with Dong People’s national cultureand traditions. The drum-tower is a great symbol of Dong’s social culture andarchitectural culture for its unique history, customs, geographical environment, thephilosophy of “the unity of heaven and humanity” and “animalism”, and worship ofsubstance and totem.Last but not the least, this paper presents a conclusional analysis of the protectionand development of the drum-tower, which is the preservation and development shouldbe coordinated with the environment so as to reveal the drum-tower’s social value.
