Research On Practice Strategy Of Critical Regionalism Based On The Analysis Of The Aga Khan Architecture Award

The search for regional architecture has been the “significant study” in Chinesearchitecture field. From the study of traditional Chinese architecture in the1920s,People have disagreed about this issue. It is the “tanglement" in our hearts: on one hand,traditional regional architecture and cultural is variant and beautiful; on the other hand,the modern environment has become increasingly homogeneous and boring. With therapid urbanization in China, it appears more urgent. Unfortunately, regional architecturepractice is indeed showing a state of turmoil in China, of course, little success and morefallacy, and symbolic collage of scenery style and tendency to formalism is particularlyserious. From this level, clarifying the essence of regionalism and offering somespecific practice strategies is of great significance to Chinese present regionalismpractice.In this paper, practical strategies will be presented, with the beginning of teasingthe most dynamic geographical theory—Critical Regionalism, combined with a largenumber of cases for the Aga Khan Architecture Award. The Aga Khan ArchitectureAward, a regional architectural awards (Islamic world), with special attention to how tomaintain the continuity of traditional regional culture in the globalized environment, hasmade the super-achieving through the efforts of30years.Through theoretical analysis and case study, both non-material aspects and materialaspects of the practical strategies will be suggested. In non-material aspects of practicestrategy, several types, concluded from the shape and space of traditional regionalarchitecture by the typology methods, are reinterpreted in the modern technologyconditions and demand to reflect connection of the built environment with the past(diachronic). Material aspects of the practice of strategy are careful on the deal with thegeographical resources, construction methods, etc, reflecting the differences betweenthe different regions (synchronic). The expression of this difference is threatened byglobal technological system. Then, it is necessary to adapt the local technology andglobalization. Material aspects of the practice of strategy adapt them from materials,details, and construction.Through theoretical discussion, this paper seriously reflects on the background ofthe regional practice in China. Based on reflection of personal practice, this paperdiscusses and summarizes how the regional features forms, and what is the construction of regionalism approach. Also this paper explores a summary and outlook ofrepresentative architectural practice of regionalism of China since the1980s.I hope this paper, under the research on the critical regionalism practice strategy, isuseful to region continuation in rapid construction practice in China.
