The technology of masonry building which is one of human’s the oldestconstruction methods has a history of several thousand years. Building construction isaccompanied by the construction of external space environment, the history that theuse of stone in human settlements is the history of the masonry landscape’sconstruction. Because of the modern building’s requirements of the constructionefficiency and the seismic levels, which lead to the technology of masonry beingwashed out gradually in the modern building, the development trend is in decline.Contemporary architecture only use stone as symbol for the adornment of the surface,to meet the people’s aesthetic pursuit for masonry art. However, The technology ofmasonry carry on the history of human’s construction culture, still have extreme strongaesthetic value and cultural value. Today, in local or urban artificial environment, stoneis used for the retaining wall, the bounding wall, the ground, the revetment. the gutterand so on, making a huge artificial landscape system, its has very strong designpotential. This paper researches on the use and the value of the masonry’s technologyfrom the perspective of landscape architecture, and put forward the concept ofMasonry Landscape which is this paper’s study argument.The masonry landscape is that stone masonries in certain areas consist of theartificial landscape with certain aesthetic meanings. This paper is established in theconcept and the noumenon characteristic of Masonry Landscape. At first,to analyzeand summarize the material characteristics of masonry landscape in order to expoundthe materials’ construction logic. Secondly, to investigate the masonry landscape in thelocal environment of our country so as to expound its local features from theperspectives of culture and ecology, including the landscape characteristics’ expression of the masonry interface and space itself. Finally, the starting point ismodern mature landscape theory and practice, combining with domestic andinternational masonry landscape cases to expound masonry landscape’s artisticexpression、landscaping mode and landscaping principle. And, to probe the artisticexpression and design method of the masonry interface and space, taking the oldconstruction method masonry as the Important Carrier of contemporaryartificial landscape expression in order to supply informative and thought-provokingreference for modern landscape material’s ecological applications, and making theold construction material stone shine new design energy to display the more widedesign space.
