In aircraft manufacturing, riveting is the basis joint technology of aircraft assembly. In thedomestic, hand drilling and riveting are still widely used, which causes poor quality of aircraftassembly, low efficiency, and coordination difficulties, further hampers the implementation ofautomated and flexible assembly. To meet the development requirements of the high quality and longlife airframe structure, and achieve the high quality, long life, low cost, high efficiency assembly joint,sufficient drilling process experimental works and comprehensive theoretical studies for long life jointof aircraft are performed. The research of this dissertation mainly includes as follows:Firstly, the paper has reviewed and introduced the present development trend of the jointtechnology and long life drilling of aircraft assembly, elaborated the advanced joint technology:automatic drilling and riveting technology, robot drilling technology, and then analysis the gap of jointtechnology of aircraft assembly between home with abroad. At last the significance and contents ofthe research are put forward.Secondly, the basic mechanism of drilling technology is studied, structure parameters of twistdrill are analyzed, composition of drilling force and its influencing factors are investigated, relatedmechanism on the growth of burr are worth made thorough study, a cutting model of the growth ofdrilling burr is established, and the automatic drilling system and testing platform are set up.Thirdly, the drilling process test of aerospace thin-walled workpiece is launched. The methods ofautomatic drilling process are studied, the experiments on control of drilling quality and optimum toolselection are conducted, and a layered feed drilling process is advanced, in order to optimal controldrilling burr shapes and sizes. The effects of technical parameters and structural parameters of the toolon the quality of drilling are analyzed. The better process parameters and structural parameters of thetool are given by the automatic drilling technology.Finally, the joint quality of thin-walled component under the control of the drilling quality isinvestigated. The surface contact mechanism of rivet and hole is studied, and the size and uniformityof interference fit level and fatigue life with the different diameter of the joint hole and the differentsurface roughness of hole surface are analyzed. At last, the reasonable parameters of drilling quality,and set up an automatic drilling system on process control are given.
