Traditional handicraft intangible cultural heritage is an integral part of China’s traditional culture as well as the crystallization of production and life style of generations and generations of Chinese people. Rapid development of the society, enrichment of material needs, especially progression of industrialization and thriving of mechanical production have led to change in the traditional production and life style and severe impact on the traditional handicraft industry. The change in the traditional production and life style deprives the living soil of the traditional handicraft industry, which requires prompt protection.Inherited from the palace and carried on by folks, Beijing’s palace blanket weaving technique is based on practices in traditional production and life in China. Though having certain difference in production materials since ancient times (Picture:an excavated wooden hand and a modern rake), tools and measuring instruments used by such technique remain largely the same in shape and usage. With accumulation in long years of practice in production and inheritance by generations and generations of craftsmen, the palace blanket weaving technique has been continuously recreated while preserving its cultural connotation and core skills, and has formed a relatively mature system. Its material earrier, Beijing palace blanket, integrates practical applicability, appreciation value and collection value. Palace blankets remain from Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasty provide evidence for our study on blanket using etiquettes and conventions in palace. Beijing’s palace blanket weaving technique not only has lasting appeal of royal palace as well as folk cultural characteristics of Man, Mongolia and Tibetan nation. After it is passed on in the folks, it also integrates many regional cultural elements and is thus a production of blending of diverse cultures. However, this technique is mostly taught by personal example as well as verbal instruction and is difficult to learn, which leads to difficulty in inheritance. Currently, the inheritance and development of this technique is facing severely challenge, and needs prompt preservation.Study of this article is to assess the existence state of Beijing’s palace blanket weaving technique, analyze problems in inheritance and protection and cultural ecology for survival of this technique, enrich the ideas for protection of traditional handicraft intangible cultural heritage and push forward the protection of intangible cultural heritage.
