In this paper,the cationic additives PCEA modified by chicken-feather protin wasused to modify cotton fabric to solve the low dye uptake and fixation and to realizesalt-free dyeing in reactive dyeing.This is a new way to achieve salt-free dyeing.At the first,the conditions of dissolving feather and producting protein powderwas discussed. The dissolution rate was evaluation index.The best preparation processwas that50g chicken-feather and the quality ratio of feather to water was1to20, thedosage of NaHSO3was10g/L,the pretreatment temperature was80℃,reacting for20min;Then add in caustic soda, the dosage of NaOH was10g/L, reacting at70℃for1.5h.Then titrating the feather protein solution by hydrochloric acid for adjusting pHto protein isoelectric point3.0,get protein powder by precipitation,drying andgrinding.The PCEA was obtained by WLS modifying feather protin. The synthetic stepand synthsis condition were discussed: the quality ratio of protein to WLS was3to25,the weight of NaOH was0.28g, reacting at60℃for3.5h. The IR spectrometry ofPCEA shows it contains reactive groups epoxy ethane.The PCEA was applied incotton dyeing,The dosage of PCEA,process time,and process temperature wereresearched and the optimum craft of PCEA modifying cotton fabric and dyeing craftwas definited.The dyeing propertyof unmodified cotton conventional dyeing and modifiedcotton salt-free dyeing were evaluated.The results showed that salt-free dyeing hadbetter dye uptakes and fixation compared with conventional dyeing,at the sametime,fastness to washing and rubfastness were enhanced greatly, especially the wetrubbing.The levelness of cotton fabric modified by PCEA is good in the case of fullystirring.In this paper,to research dyeing properties of modified cotton furtherly, modifiedcotton dyeing dynamics and thermodynamics changes were disscused.The resultsshowed that dyeing rates of modified cotton was increased,and its effect may meet orexceed traditional salt dyeing.Its adsorption isotherm changes Freundlich intoLamiuer,which shows the surface of modified cotton fiber was introducing cationic groups. Adsorption mechanism changes from unpositioning physical adsorption intochemical positioning adsorption.The wearing performance of cotton fabric modified with PCEA wa s measured.The results have showed that the elongation at breaking,elasticrecovery,handle,drapability, wettability are very good. Therefore, wear behavior wasimproved and saving the dye.Finally, the IR spectrometry,TGA and SEM of PCEA,modified and unmodifiedcotton were measured to characterize the structure of PCEA,modified cotton and toanalyze the action mechanism about PCEA and fabfic. The results have showed thatthe modified cotton fiber was introducing cationic groups and the heat resistance wasimproved thanks to PCEA cross-linked film at the fabric surface.This study not only realize reactive dyes salt-free dyeing,but also costsaving,environment-friendly and changing waste into valuable.In a word,this study isvery significative.
