Reactive dyes have bright dyeing colors, complete chromatography and excellent fastness to washing. However, since cellulose fibers themselves adopt an anionic surface charge in water, these dyes have low affinity for the cellulose fibers. The reaction between the dye and the cellulose is a nucleophilic displacement. The above reactions are progressed under the alkaline conditions. The repulsive charge between dyes and cellulose fibers can be overcome by adding an electrolyt such as sodium chloride or sodium sulfate, which has the effect of screaming the surface charge on the cellulose fibers. The large quantity of salt in the effluent, however, causes pollution of rivers and streams and upsets the biological equilibrium. To increase dyebath exhaustion and reduce the usage of salt,a number of attempts have been made to modify the cellulose fibers using the compounds containing the cationic groups. The dye uptakes and fixation yield of modified fibers dyed with reactive dyes without salt were significantly improved. However, the problem is that graft agents have low affinity for cellulose fibers and large amount. So far, synthesis and design of novel active compounds is still the focus of research in this field. This paper synthesized a type of Star-like Cross-linking Agents containing multi cationic groups through cyanuric chloride react with N,N-dimethyl propylene diamine,Diethylenetriamine and 1,2-diaminoethane.The novel compounds have high molecular weight. These multi-cation compounds are N,N-bi-[2-hydroxy-3-chloropro--pyl]-Diethylenetriamine-N,N-bi-[(2-hydroxy-3-trimethy-ammonium)propyl-1,3,5-tri--azine echloride,N,N-bi-[benzyl]-Diethylenetriamine-N,N-bi-2,4-bi-[(2-hydroxy-3-tri -methy-ammonium)propyl]-1,3,5-triazine chloride andN-[1,2-diaminoethane]-N,N-bi--2,4-bi-[2-hydroxy-3-trimethy-ammonium)propyl]-1,3,5-triazine chloride. The reac--tion temperature and pH of each step have been ascertained. The molecular structure of compounds was analyzed with IR.The reaction between N,N -bi-[2-hydroxy-3-chloropropyl]-Diethylenetriamine -N,N-bi-2,4-bi-[(2-hydroxy-3-trimethy-ammonium)propyl]-1,3,5-triazine chloride and cotton fabric was studied.Disscussed the reaction conditions such as the consume of graft and caustic soda, temperature and time. The optimal graft condition of fabric is: grafting concentration is 40g/L,NaOH concentration is 10g/L,react for 3-5h at room temperature. The nitrogen content analysis of modified cotton shows that the compounds were able to form convalent bonds with cellulose. The modified cellulose fibers were dyed with reactive dyes, and the influence of alka-line agent, electrolyt concentration and dye to dyeing behavior was researched. The results have revealed that the modified cellulose dyed with reactive dyes without salt was not sensitive to salt, alkali and ratio. The modified cellulose dyed with 6 different reactive dyes, the results showed that the exhaustion of modified cellulose fibers had been improved from 85%to 95%.The fixation of modified cellulose fibers has been improved from 80%to 90%.Besides the fastness of dye and wet rubbing and washing fastness of modified was the same as that of unmodified cellulose fibers. The physical properties and thermal stability were investigated with strength test, crease recovery angle test and DSC.The results showed that the thermal stability of the modified cellulose fibers were slightly improved. The strength at rupture was worse than the general cellulose.
