Water is the source of the life, the deterioration of the water environment hasbecome the most sensitive problems in the world already. In some degree, thedevelopment speed and the scale of human society depends on water environmentalcarrying capacity. It is one of the basic prerequisites of ensuring social and economysustainable development. In order to protect water environment and to use waterresource reasonably, it is important to know the real capacity of water environmemt,especially in mining area which is one of major contamination source.Zhaishang goldmine is located in Gansu province where the water resource islimited, the water problem has restricted the development of economy seriously.Evaluating the current water environmental situation and water environmentalcarrying capacity,exploring effective way to utilize and protect water resourceseffectively and safely have important guidance functions to industrial developing andliving level improving.Based on field survey and sampling, and combined with the research status athome and abroad, the environmental conditions and water environmental carryingcapacity are discussed in this article. Firstly, the current environmental situation hasbeen studied, it shows that the local environment is not optimistic, the content of someheavy metals in the water (Arsenic, Mercury) have gone beyond the limit of the level3standard for surface water quality, the rate of over standard of Arsenic and Mercuryare16.7%and72%respectively. The contents of heavy metals in the soil samples arealmost the same, only one of them has gone beyond the limit. In the sediment samplesthe contents of Arsenic are high (the highest has been189.0μg·g-1) and some of themhave been above the standard. Also the concentration of heavy metals in the rocksample is high. Secondly, the chemical species of heavy metals in the sediment weredetermined by the Tessier sequential extraction method, results demonstrate that thefractions of every heavy metal in these samples are almost the same,the heavy metalsmainly existed in residual fraction, the content of other fractions are very low,So theheavy metals are relatively stable in natural condition,they do little damage to the environment. Finally, the water environmental carrying capacity of Zhaishanggoldmine is calculated by the environmental carrying rate, it indicates that the localwater environmental carrying capacity is limited,the economic and socialsustainabledevelopment of Zhaishang goldmine could not be supported. Combining thecharacteristic of the water environment,it puts forward the feasible measures ofimproving the water environmental carrying capacity and provides some scientificbases for accelerating the sustainable development.
