As a natural phenomenon, lightning has a great impact to human’s lives and production, and is one of natural disasters which bring about serious loss to human, such as forest fire, power failure, and aerospace. Every year, there is serious economic losses and casualties, so the research about lighting phenomenon is especially significant. FPGA-maturing brings huge benefits to deal with the large and high-speed data, especially and is irreplacable in the real-time processing.In this thesis, on the basis of the lightning and thunder and lightning systems, develop independently single station lightning monitor positioning system based on FPGA, and achieve lightning location、 feature information extraction and data storage and display. Compared to the previous lightning monitoring system, the biggest advantages of the system designed in this paper is the real-time processing of data. The so-called real-time nature is to get lightning relevant data such as location information or the like when lightning information is received. To achieve real-time feature, it must require FPGA able to achieve the required data processing capacity as well as PCI Express bus transmission speed must meet that the data is not lost. Design uses the Xilinx Sparton-3A DSP1800models of FPGA hardware implementation, design verification and on the board of the X3-10M. Through field tests, the system basically meets the relevant requirements, and while the data is not lost, but also to meet the real-time requirement.In summary, the focus of this paper is to determine the data acquisition process of the program, including the A/D sampling, data flow integration, feature data extraction, data transmission of packaged and GPS time extraction. The difficulty lies in how the data is real-time package transmission as well as the characteristics of information extraction algorithm in hardware platform.Overall, the thesis is to achieve a comprehensive processing FPGA-based lightning light electromagnetic information. There are the following several innovations in the implementation process:1, real-time information processing, timely access to relevant characteristic data of the lightning;2, based on the return stroke waveform peak extraction algorithm accurately obtain the lightning hit back waveform peaks;3, through the IP core achieve lightning location algorithm, successfully get lightning location information.
