Nowadays the process of informatization and intellectualization of tourist industry is accelerating its pace due to the promotion of intelligent tourism. Many projects of different areas are under construction to develop new tour schemes and provide tourist with more personalized tour experience. The ITG, which is short for Intelligent Tourist Guide, based on mobile GIS, spatial positioning and wireless communication technology, aims to provide personalized, friendly and comprehensive traveling information. And the speech interaction is an effective way to improve ITG’s quality.Followed by a review of development of ITG, the characteristics of its information service, and the research proceeding in natural language description, this paper analyzed the drawbacks of current ITGs in information broadcasting. An adaptive information broadcast method was proposed with user position, moving status and spatial feature characteristics taken into consideration. Main points are as follows:Based on the influencing factors of information broadcast, an adaptive broadcast mechanism was introduced. We specified the triggering method for the obtaining of broadcast target and the generation of broadcast content, and built a broadcast status model and a switching scheme. Based on above, the concepts of "broadcast distance","broadcast duration" and "broadcast text length" and their calculation methods are proposed.Considering the characteristics of spatial features, this paper also introduced a concept of "broadcast extent" and its building method. We constructed the polygon-shaped broadcast extents for each broadcast object in scenic area to further constrain tourists’ route. The broadcast can be triggered due to the judgment of the relationship between tourist’s real-time position and object’s broadcast extent or broadcast route. When target object is determined, its introduction text is queried from data base, and the real-time spatial information generated are added, such as location description considering multi-spatial relationships of spatial features, and the turning information considering the morphology of the crossroads. When broadcast content is ready, the whole text was divided into classes by sentence according to their significance, and the duration and text length are calculated according to the tourist’s velocity, which aims to adjust the text length, reset the broadcast moment to ensure the fluency of speech broadcast. At last, after preprocessing the scenic area data, we designed and implemented a prototype system to validate the adaptive broadcast method. By varying factor values and broadcast conditions, the feasibility of this method was proved.
