With the rapid development of economy, land resources are becoming increasinglyexiguous. Land reclamation, which not only increases precious land resources but alsoprovides reserved land for the development of the city, is of vital importance toregional economic development.tIn the land-use planning of Shanghai, it has been proposed that we should tap thepotential of water resources in a planned way and do well in mudflat development inorder to relieve the demand pressures on land resources. Therefore, it is quitenecessary to speed up the progress of land reclamation so as to meet the requirementof the sustainable development of Shanghai’s economy in this century. Thereclamation project of north coast of Chongming is a major component of the mudflatdevelopment and utilization in the land use planning of Shanghai urban construction, and it is also one of the important engineering measures in the comprehensiveimprovement of the north branch of river. In the large-scale reclamation project, a different general layout will influence theconstruction schedule, source of the building materials, the conditions of transport and soon. More importantly, it will change the hydrodynamic and sediment transportconditions and lead to new dynamic balance in the riverbed evolution. Therefore, thereclamation project of the north coast of Chongming is taken as an example in thisthesis. Based on the analysis of natural conditions, riverbed evolution and flow field, theauthor uses the latest MIKE21which is developed by the Danish hydraulics institute(DHI) to study the layout by numerical simulation analysis and optimization design.Besides, according to the characteristics and difficulties of the project, the authorstudies the layout of the earth depot and the sand source for dike building. In the end, environmental impacts assessment of this project is discussed. The results of thisresearch are of reference value for domestic project construction of medium and highbeach reclamation.
