Natural disasters are important global problems to the human society. For the cities on thecoastlines, typhoon is the most serious natural disaster and it happens frequently. Coastal citieshave a faster development in comparison with inner cities due to their superior geographicalpositions, convenient transportation systems and good economic bases. However, with the rapiddevelopment of urbanization, the population and social wealth are concentrated in the coastal cities,which bring larger possibility to lose more seriously in the natural disasters. Therefore, theinternational communities and academics pay close attentions to the researches about naturaldisasters in coastal cities. Vulnerability analysis, as one of the vital tools, is considered much moreimportant than ever before.This thesis introduces the ways to improve prevention and mitigation capacity for cities in thenatural disasters. Coordinate systems and mathematical models can be established for thevulnerability analysis and empirical study of road lifeline system. In the vulnerability analysis, a setof parameters can be chosen according to specific cases. Generally, three factors are considered asthe key elements in natural disasters, which are the reason causes the disaster, the environmentinduces the disaster and the hazard-affected body. This lifeline system can be used for mosttransportation systems, including roads, bridges and tunnels. Each component in road lifelinesystem can be allocated a weight factor, weight factors can be varied for different systemsaccording to the environment. In this thesis, Ningbo city will be selected as the generalenvironment and several roads are studied.This paper which base on the clear concept, evaluation idea and the vulnerability ofideas,then choice the relevant research method and technical means, constructs index systemand model of the typhoon disaster road lifeline system under the vulnerability evaluation. Ningboas a whole in the study area, the empirical research choices part of the road points sections andcombine GIS mapping technique, the result shows that road lifeline system on the typhoon disasterunder the vulnerability of the strength of the typhoon in different are quite different, and in theirown conditions of link and the surrounding environment conditions under the influence of themagnitude of the vulnerability were different. Finally, conclusions are made according to thedocumented results and potential future works are also prospected.
