The Mueller matrix of the target structure is closely associated with its owncharacteristic nature, such as material, surface roughness, structure, and so on. TheMueller matrix is measured for more natural parameters of the target with ellipsometer.Since different target has different Mueller matrix under the different detect environments, the depolarization index and polarization derived from Mueller matrix only are not able tointerpret the target’s surface property accurately.Basing on the detection technology of laser polarization, the traditional Muellermatrix’s measurement and calculation are analyzed in detail. The polarization property ofMueller matrix is reinterpreted by the decomposition and the constraints among theMueller-Jones matrix elements, and a method of scalar metric reflecting target’spolarization properties is provided. Last, this model is proved and analyzed using sometipicle Mueller matrixes. Therefore, the derivation is simple for judging the mediumfeature.Firstly, the surface property of the medium detected by the polarized light are deeplystudied and analyzed. The polarization characteristic of the general surface scattering isanalyzed, according to the mathematic characterization for the polarized light and thepolarization system.Secondly, the calculation principle of Stokes parameters and Mueller matrix of targetmedium with Mueller matrix polarimeter is studied, the error of the system is corrrected inprinciple. Finally, based on the traditional theoretical analysis of the polarization characteristics, the process for Polar decomposition of experinmentally measured Mueller matrix intothree pure polarization matrixes is described. The method of using a scalar metricsimplified Mueller matrix of target, which reflecting target’s polarization properties isprovided. Then, using experimentally measured Mueller matrixes, this scalar metric forjudging the internal conditions of target medium was verified. The caculation comparedwith traditional results shows that this method is feasible and specificlied for quantitative analysis of laser polarization detecting.
