Since reform and opening to the outside world, Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and round-the-Bohai Economic Zone have risen rapidly in eastern China. The three major economic growth poles have obvious concentration effect and radiation effect. They have become important pillars of national economy. Compared to the backward economic status of the western region, rapid evolution of the eastern part has made more apparent imbalance in regional development between East and West. This lack of coordination between regions has become the bottleneck of hindering economic fast and stable growth and gradually becomes the focus of attention and the one of difficult problems.Promoting coordinated and sustainable development of regional economic has been stressed once again in Report on the Work of the Government of 2011 "Two Congresses". The vast western region needs and also urgently needs an economic growth pole corresponded to eastern three growth poles. And how to properly select the economic growth pole of 12 western provinces is the first issue of promoting economic development in West China. It is also the problem must be solved with successful and effective implementation of the western development strategy. The solution to the problem is in favor of profoundly implementing the strategy of Development of the West Regions, and conducive to coordinated development of regional economy as a whole. So, this article for this issue has important practical significance, and provides a new way for Development of the West Regions.1. The study perspective of this dissertationIn the background of the development of western China, this paper starts from the level of prefecture-level cities in 12 western provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities), based on economic spatial structure of city scale, supported by the growth pole theory, the spatial structure of theory, regional economics, geography theory, spatial statistics and spatial econometrics principles and methods, based on the status of economic growth in the western region, and proposed the theory and the idea of building economic growth pole in the western regional, which is based on perspective of regional economic spatial structure. And, in theory based on the assumption, select major prefecture-level cities of the 12 western provinces as the object of empirical study, supported by GIS, spatial statistics and spatial econometrics software, draw the map of prefecture-level cities in 12 western provinces, use cutting-edge research methods in spatial economics—spatial statistical analysis and spatial econometrics modeling method for a depth analysis, verify and correct the theoretical concept, improve the theory of economic growth pole construction and evolution which is based on the perspective of spatial structure, put forward specific measures on the optimization of economic spatial structure in western China, fostering economic growth pole in the western region.2. The main structure of this dissertationThe first chapter is the introduction. In the first, it introduces the background of this dissertation; secondly, it enunciates the purpose and significance of the research dissertation; thirdly, it outlines research methods, major contents and basic structures of this dissertation. The second chapter is the related literature review inside and abroad. Starting with theory, empirical analysis and specific research method, the chapter sums up and review the related literature about economic growth points, which providing provide theoretic reference and instructional methods. Then, it indicates the shortages of the recent literature and suggests an improvement method. The third chapter is an overview of the theoretical foundation and models for the dissertation research. This chapter mainly enunciates the theory of regional economic growth points and the modes of spatial statistical analysis and spatial econometrics analysis that provides theoretical fundamental base for empirical analysis. The fourth chapter is the core element of this dissertation, which is the empirical analysis for building western economic growth points. Firstly this chapter chooses measuring indicators of spatial structure evolution of the economic growth pole in 12 western provinces (autonomous regions and municipality). Secondly it makes descriptive statistical analysis and economic spatial structure analysis on regional prefecture-level city economic development situation. Thirdly it makes spatial structure analysis on western areas economic growth using quartile map, general spatial autocorrelation analysis (Moran's Index) and local spatial autocorrelation analysis (Moran scatter plot and LISA Cluster Map).Fourth it builds spatial econometrics model to estimate western economic growth by Spatial Error Model which is the best model of ordinary linear square, Spatial Lag Model and Spatial Error Model and reveal each regional level city influence on western economic growth by Geographical Weighted Regression. The end of the chapter is the empirical analysis summary. The fifth chapter is the final chapter of this dissertation. It summarizes this dissertation through the conclusion of this dissertation, policy recommendations, limitation of this dissertation and further research.3. The main conclusions of this dissertationThis dissertation mainly focuses on the choice of 12 western provinces economic growth points. It makes in-depth studies and analysis on descriptive statistics, economic spatial structure analysis and spatial statistics and spatial econometrics mode by these indicators GDP, Financial Revenue, fixed-asset investment and so on. It arrives at the following conclusions:(1)The economy of 12 western provinces has developed fast in development of the West Regions. There still exists a gap in comparison with that of the national average on the whole. Economic development of the western areas is materially unbalanced.(2) The economic development of 12 western provinces has obvious spatial effects, the concrete features are that:Spatial Error Autocorrelation and spatial heterogeneity, that is to say:economic activity among western areas is all linked together and there exists a big difference. So this dissertation has to choose spatial statistics and spatial econometrics approaches to make empirical analysis.(3) Spatial Structure of the economy showed significant spatial aggregation and gradually approached to Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi'an, Kunming, Nanning, Hohhot, Urumqi and other capital city, showing a distinct core-periphery model. Among them, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi'an, three with high levels of economic development in large urban centers in the space photogenic connected through transportation and economic links form the axis of the West Delta economic zone, formed the center of the western region of China-hinterland system.(4) The position of developed cities is strengthened further; the economic growth poles have appeared. Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi'an as the center of the rise of the West Delta Region economy has become economically developed or developing regional level cities concentrated area.4. The innovation of this dissertationOverall, the paper has three characteristics:Firstly, it considers the spatial interaction effects among various economic factors. Then it analyzes characteristics of our western area's spatial structure evolution of the economy and action mechanism from the large-scale development of China's western region plan and further analyzes economic growth of western area by spatial method. So this way is more complete and accurate than the way which assuming homogeneous region to research difference of economic development. In the study of western region economic growth, most researchers assume that is homogeneous within the region. That is, economic activity is separated by different regions. This assumption without considering spatial factors does not correspond to the real economy.Secondly, with taking regional level cities of the 12 provinces (autonomous regions and municipality) in west China as research object, this paper made in-depth and careful studies and analysis on the interior of region on the basis of taking into full account regional spatial effect, so it obtains more objective results of scientific research. The research about economic growth points focus on national or provincial scale and lacks coverage of level cities of the 12 provinces (autonomous regions and municipality) in west China. Generally speaking, the more the spatial units of analysis are close, the more they have close relationship. If the spatial units of analysis is too big and heterogeneity is ignored, that covers the great differences within the region, weakening the scientific conclusions.Thirdly, on the support of GIS technique and spatial econometric software, this paper takes a spatial statistical analysis approach and a spatial econometrics approach to make system analysis on characteristics of spatial structure evolution, of the economy of level cities of the 12 provinces (autonomous regions and municipality) in west China, the result provides the scientific basis for building western economic growth points. From correlative recent study, there are some scholars who try their best to do economic growth points research. However, their research methods are a qualitative analysis method. There are more quantitative research adopting descriptive statistical analysis approaches and comprehensive evaluation approaches than adopting spatial statistical analysis approaches and spatial econometrics modeling method。...
