Land use change is the forefront of global change research and hot topic, and driving forceis the core of land use change. Study on land use change and its driving force have importantsignificance to master the law of land use change and forecast the trend. With the developmentand promotion of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), study onland use change get considerable development. RS and GIS provide an effective technicalsupport for study on land use change. On the basis of RS and GIS as the main technology, this paper interpret two remote sensingimages of Wuxi City in2001and2006by supervised classification, get two period of land usedata. Based on above result, using land use dynamic degree model, land use degree change model, and land use types of transfer matrix model, this paper makes an analysis on land use changebetween2001and2006in Wuxi City. Reference to the Statistical Yearbook of Wuxi City, westudy driving force of land use change in study area by principal component analysis. The mainconclusions are as follows:(1) During the study period, land use in Wuxi City has changed greatly. Among them, garden plot and construction land show a trend of increase, while cultivated land, forest land andwater have different degrees of reduction.(2) Garden plot increase with a biggest variety speed and the dynamic degree is15.64%.Next is construction land and the dynamic degree is5.63%. The dynamic degree of cultivatedland, forest land, water is-3.30%,-1.06%,-0.49%.(3) The comprehensive index of land use degree in Wuxi City between2001and2006hasincreased7.12and this result shows that land use degree in study area has improved. Thechange rate of land use degree in study area is0.0244which is greater than zero and this resultshows that the land use is in development period.(4) The conversion of land types is obvious. The conversion area of cultivated land is largestand the main direction of conversion is construction land and garden plot.(5) The result shows that the main driving force of land use change is population growth andeconomic development, followed by technology progress.
