Wood Furniture plays a significant role in both the global production and trading of forestry products. China has become the biggest producer and exporter of wooden furniture in the world after its 30 years fast development. As of 2010, our wood furniture export value has achieved to$13.222billion. Along with the fast development of wood furniture industry, wood furniture industry is also facing a variety of impediment factors including insufficient forests, green trade barriers, unclean production and so forth.Writer begins with a brief description of the industry and highlights the current challenges and compelling measures of WFPs from a systems perspective through the lens of the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) and by applying backcasting from sustainability principles (SPs). One of the key points is that Templates for Sustainable Product Development (TSPDs) has been created to promote the transition of wood furniture company towards sustainability.Meanwhile, an examination of the sustainability issued overhanging wood furniture products is performed based on sustainability principles and Strategic Life Cycle Management(SLCM).The whole lifecycle of wood furniture products include raw material(log),production, transportation, use and end of life. The main sustainability issues faced by wood furniture products include: unsustainable forestry silvilculture operation, use of unclean energy, use of chemicals such as stains, glues, polishes which are the main sources or VOCs and formaldehyde emissions.Templates for Sustainable Product Development (TSPDs) approaches were applied in order to engage the participating Company in the transition process towards sustainability and to provide an applicable tool for WFP development. The TSPDs were created based on the views of sustainability and WFP experts. This has developed the templates further and contributed to the overall development of the WFPs towards sustainability Other recommended and compelling measures for the sustainable development of WFPs include:cooperating with non-government organizations (NGOs), conserving forests resources, clean production methods, "take-back" policy in the wood furniture industry, reforming government policies relevant to the industry, implementing waste management systems, green supply chains, clean energy use and distribution, and smart packaging.
