| Economic development situations in different regions in China are unbalanced, especially in the vast west. There are insufficiencies in terms of original economic base, human resources, capital, technology, etc., compared with the average level in China. At the same time, there are abundant natural resources, unique geographical advantages, effective infrastructure construction achievements and other advantages in the western region. Western Development conference 2010 confirmed that we should carry out Western Development steadily and give priority to it. Currently, governments in western regions need to think about how to carry out development rapidly, and eventually catch up with the east regions, under the background of the financial crisis and eastern industrial transfer. Many domestic and international theories and practical cases showed that the industrial clustering is an effective way to improve the regional competitiveness and promote regional economic growth. Government needs to make a serious decision that whether industrial clustering should be the western region development strategy to improve economic development. Therefore, we should explore the relationship between industrial clustering and economic growth in the western region. As an important concept in new economic geography, regional specialization is an important and popular method to study the situation of specific areas of industrial clusters. In this context, this article engaged in research in the relationship between Western Region Manufacturing and industrial clusters. After reviewing the theory of industrial clusters, defining several groups of concepts and introducing the research methods, this article used Krugman index and location quotient in the theory of regional specialization to measure the manufacturing industry clusters level in various regions of China. It found that there is an uptrend in the specialization degree between 1999~2008 in various regions of China.Compared with eastern, central and northeast regions, we can get the conclusion that the western provinces obtained relatively higher degree of specialization and more strong specialized industries. After further research on the regional specialization situation in the west and its impact on economic development, we found that specialization and economic growth in most western regions are positively correlated. Then we briefly classified and analyzed the western provinces according to the correlation level. Finally, after a detailed analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges of the western region and integration with the situation of its regional specialization, the western provinces were divided into four types and development proposals were put forward. |
