The number of large enterprises is in the minority and the majority is SMEs whether at home or abroad. SMEs have played a very important role in the process of the national economy development, particularly in the aspects of market activing, income distributing, employment expanding, social stability and structure and layout of the national economy. Therefore, in order to play the better role of SMEs, the growth of SMEs has become the subject of many scholars. However, the SMEs have limitations because of their own, as a result, there are many problems in their growth process. So how to overcome the negative factors or what are the driving factors in SMEs' healthy growth process has become a key research question. This article is also from the perspective of drivers to conduct a study on the growth of SMEs.Firstly, this article analyzes the existing researches and defines the concept of SMEs and their growth. Secondly, the article systematically reviews the theory of SMEs and the status of the researches about the drivers of the SMEs. Thirdly, the article gives the detailed analysis about internal and external factors which can drive the growth of SMEs combined with the characteristics of SMEs. After that, the article designs the detailed growth index system about the growth drivers and the indexes that can measure the growth of the SMEs, and then through the form of questionnaires to select 70 small and medium enterprises in Shandong Province as the study sample to obtain the required data. At last, the article applies the methods of factor analysis and regression analysis to extract the nine major driving factors and the quantitative relationship between the drivers and the growth of the SMEs.The article can be divided into six chapters. The first chapter is an introduction, the second chapter reviews the Enterprise Growth Theory and the status of the researches about the drivers of the SMEs, the third chapter detailed analyzes the drivers in the growth of SMEs, the fourth chapter establishes the driver model, and gives the design of indicator system, the fifth chapter does the empirical research on the factors, and the last chapter is the conclusion and outlook.
