Based on spatial attributes of the regional economy, from the perspective of spatial heterogeneity view, this paper clarifies the meaning of spatial club convergence, puts forward the methods to identify the spatial club convergence, explores the manifestations and measurement indicators of the spatial heterogeneity, and reveals the effects of spatial heterogeneity on the spatial club convergence. According to the regional initial conditions and the spatial heterogeneity characterization, we take Guangdong province for a case region and use hierarchical clustering analysis method for regional groupings. Accordingly, on the basis of testing spatial club convergence, we gradually bring the spatial heterogeneity factors into the spatial convergence model and analyze the mechanism of spatial heterogeneity on the spatial club convergence.Spatial heterogeneity refers to the natural and economic geography conditions and economic factors which are closely related to economic activity and differences presented by other relevant factors in space. Its manifestation covers spatial differences including natural economic geography factors, economic factors and soft power factors. This research shows that spatial club convergence is closely related to spatial heterogeneity. Spatial club convergence probably only takes place in the regions which have the similar initial conditions, natural economic geography factors, economic factors and soft power factors. Different spatial heterogeneity factors will cause economic space to become differentiated. Regions with similar heterogeneity and adjacent in space will agglomerate in space, which leads to initial appearance of spatial club convergence and further formation of the spatial convergence club. The empirical analysis of Guangdong province in different stages shows that the spatial heterogeneity plays a role in the possibility and the speed of the spatial club convergence and will further affect the scale and type of the spatial convergence club.
