With the proliferation of Internet and popularity of residential broadband connections, there are increasing demands of watching text/audio/video streaming media via the Internet. However, the traditional Client/Server communication model highly depends on the centralized server's capability and bandwidth, which seriously limits the system's scalability, reliability and overall performance. P2P based streaming media delivery model effectively removes the central server bottleneck, provides a scalable solution with high reliability. There are several P2P based streaming media systems on the market. However, the P2P based stream media system still has lots of challenges such as data delivery latency, dynamic topology, ADSL asymmetric upstream/downstream bandwidth, NAT/Firewall traverse, media digital rights management, security, and overall system manageability.Based on a campus research project, this paper introduces basic P2P concepts, and in-depth analyzes and compares several P2P network model. Then it presents SuperStream, a data driven P2P based live video streaming network model. This project designs a three-level hierarchical distributed peer to peer network composed of video server, super peer and common peer nodes. It then presents the detail of three-level nodes and their corresponding functionality, and super peer selection, scheduling, and load balance algorithm. This system is adaptive to the dynamic network topology, supports large number of concurrent user to receive real-time live video stream, better utilization of peers resource and tradeoffs among bandwidth efficiency, delay and reliability. At last, to prove the feasibility and scalability of the SuperStream system, this paper measures the preliminary performance of the SuperStream system in a campus intranet in term of protocol efficiency and data latencies, and studies some key problems about the peers node management and SP load characteristics. Finally, it lists disadvantage of this project, and a few things that can be improved in future works.
